Job Title: Youth Prevention Counselor

Department: Prevention

Reports To: VP of Prevention

Location: Wellness Center: 3144 Third Avenue, Bronx NY


Job Summary:

The Youth Prevention Counselor will be responsible for providing direct prevention services, strategies and activities necessary to reduce underage drinking, alcohol misuse and abuse, illegal drug abuse, medication misuse, and problem gambling within the framework prescribed by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS).

Primary Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Deliver evidence-based life skills and prevention program in school or community settings to educate youth on making healthy choices
  • Partner with families, school administrators, social workers and program leadership to create comprehensive support systems
  • Adhere to Confidentiality Regulations including: Federal Confidentiality Regulations (42 CFR Part 2), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and the Family Educational Right and Privacy Act (FERPA)
  • Attend training seminars, case conferences, staff meetings and data driven supervision
  • Conduct outreach and recruitment activities at community and school service providers to engage youth and families in prevention education services
  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to help at-risk youth overcome challenges and reach their full potential
  • Maintain accurate and confidential case records and prepare progress reports
  • Create and disseminate quarterly prevention newsletter, monthly prevention activities calendar and related program promotional materials
  • Attend and participate in virtual & in-person local community events as required
  • Maintain a caseload of at least 35-40 unique clients in 1:1 prevention counseling
  • Meet at least 85% of all work-plan deliverables
  • Assist in preparation and completion of required reports, including narrative and quantitative data, program dashboards/census reporting and data entry of intervention activities in relevant database

 

Qualifications/Criteria:

  • A minimum of one year of related prevention work experience within either a drug treatment setting, a mental health setting, an educational setting, or community service setting.
  • Meets physical and cognitive requirements needed to complete assigned tasks and duties of the position with reasonable accommodations being made for individuals with disabilities
  • Ability to travel within the five boroughs of New York City via public transportation
  • Bilingual in Spanish a plus

Education:

  • Associates Degree; Bachelor Degree preferred (Sociology, Psychology, Education or related field)
  • Credentialed Prevention Professional (CPP) or Credentialed Prevention Specialist (CPS) a plus
