Job Summary

The Health Care Manager is a full-time, 12-month, on-site position within University Health and Counseling Services (UHCS) at Northeastern University. This clinician provides dedicated urgent mental health support to Boston-based students, serving as a key point of contact for students of concern and those referred by campus partners. Due to the nature of this position, availability on some weekday evenings and weekend days may be required.

Core clinical responsibilities include crisis intervention, psychological assessment, safety planning, short-term psychotherapy, and care coordination. The Health Care Manager will conduct urgent outreach with students in distress, develop and implement safety plans, facilitate appropriate referrals to external counseling providers, psychopharmacological services, or emergency psychiatric care as clinically indicated, and support continuity of care through follow-up appointments and outreach calls.

Responsibilities also include supervision of UHCS’ mental health triage clinicians, oversight and management of the triage and on call schedules.

This role works in close collaboration with UHCS mental health triage clinicians, counseling and medical staff, and — as needed — with University academic departments and Student Life partners. Consultation and coordination across campus are central to the position's impact.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Comprehensive knowledge of principles of Social Work, Psychology or Counseling. Demonstrated experience and competency in urgent and crisis assessment and treatment, short-term psychotherapy, assessment, and treatment of young adults with alcohol/drug abuse, eating disorders and ADHD. Prior experience in a dedicated crisis response role — such as a crisis stabilization unit, emergency psychiatric setting, mobile crisis team, or equivalent — is strongly preferred.

• Demonstrated effectiveness in working collaboratively with all health center and academic support staff, as well as with community-based hospitals and health care providers; familiarity with technology platforms required to complete virtual visits, when needed, and consultation.

• Demonstrated consistency in working in a highly diverse student and staff setting with respect and competency.

• Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.

• Demonstrated success working within the clinical and administrative policies and procedures of a university health center setting.

• Experience supervising mental health clinicians is required.

• Knowledge and skills required for this job are normally acquired through completion of a Master's degree in Social Work, Psychology or Counseling, with state license or eligibility (required) and at least five years relevant work experience. Full state licensure as LICSW, LMHC, LMFT or Psychologist required.

Responsibilities Include:

• Serves as a dedicated on-call clinical resource for students in acute distress, providing crisis intervention, safety assessment, and safety planning.

• Provides brief psychological assessments, short-term psychotherapy, and follow-up appointments to Boston-based Northeastern University students.

• Provide direct clinical supervision to mental health triage clinicians.

• Offers consultation to campus partners, academic departments, and Student Life on student mental health concerns.
