SPECIALIST, STUDENT SUPPORT AND ATTENDANCE SERVICES

The specialist serves as a field staff administrator for LAUSD Student Support and Attendance Services (SSAS) branch.  The specialist supports the region Student Support and Attendance Services coordinator. This position will be responsible for supporting with the coordination, execution, and oversight of the operations of the Student Support Programs (SSP), including personnel and initiatives, and providing operational support. The position will focus on delivering comprehensive, specialized support services aimed at eliminating disparities in student well-being, school stability, attendance, achievement, graduation, and college access for students in foster care, experiencing homelessness, involved in the juvenile justice system, or returning from probation camps or Los Angeles County Office of Education schools. Additionally, the position will oversee the A-G Diploma Program, which supports identified high school students who are at-risk or currently off-track from meeting the District’s A-G graduation requirements.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides SSP advisement and consultation with assigned school sites, offices, and SSAS personnel
  • Supervises, supports, and evaluates the work performance of SSAS certificated and classified personnel within assigned areas(e.g., community of schools, region, feeder complex)
  • Assigns cases to subordinate SSAS staff and monitors progress of students assigned to ensure priority for highest need and underserved students, schools, or regions
  • Assists the Coordinator, SSAS or director with program development and evaluation and the development of internal and external communications regarding programs and services
  • Ensures that documentation and data collection are completed by all staff, including monitoring and implementation of quality assurance processes and protocols specific to program and service objectives and in alignment with the District’s multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) framework and funding mandates
  • Assists with the development and delivery of staff development and implementation of trainings on topics related to SSAS programs
  • Regularly reviews and assesses data related to school site resources and needs, student enrollment, attendance, behavior support, adjustment and behavior, academic achievement, and progress towards graduation and prepares related reports for school site leaders, SSAS coordinator or director, and region leadership

CONTINUE: PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensures that school site personnel and assigned SSAS staff have training and policy guidance on identified student populations’ rights (e.g., school of origin, prompt enrollment and transfer of records, partial credits) and monitors and supports compliance with related laws and policies
  • Collaborates with other District personnel, guided by the Blueprint for Wellness policy, to maximize services and supports for the highest-need students, families, and schools
  • Provides technical assistance and support for student and employee matters or critical incidents relating to crisis counseling and intervention services, threat assessment and management, workplace violence prevention, and suicide prevention
  • Identifies and coordinates additional support services for assigned schools or identified student populations
  • Assists with planning, organizing, and implementing special projects, initiatives, and activities for identified student populations and in alignment with division and District goals and objectives
  • Assists with the compilation and analysis of data for the LCAP and other state and District reports
  • Assists with the development or revision of District policy bulletins, memoranda, reference guides, and inter-office communications
  • Assists with the recruitment, hiring, and training of classified and certificated staff
  • Performs other duties as assigned

SALARY:

37G, (School Support Administrator, 0515) – E Basis ($114,342 – $142,415) – 234 paid days

  • In the case of an annualized employee who is changing basis during the year, this change may result in an annualized “settlement” (i.e., the process by which the District resolves an under or overpayment).
  • For employees who change basis during the school year, this basis change may prevent them from earning a full year of service credit.
  • Selected individual may be subject to displacement due to norm allocation and seniority-based RIF provisions or due to budget limitations.
  • This position is deemed certificated under Education Code Section 44065 but may not qualify for "creditable service" under Education Code Section 22119.5 for CalSTRS benefits. However, if the candidate chosen for the position is already a CalSTRS member, he/she can fill out an election form to remain in CalSTRS and thereby obtain CalSTRS credit for this service.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Permanent certificated employee of the Los Angeles Unified School District
  • At least five (5) years of successful, full-time public-school service in a certificated position(s)
  • At least three (3) years of successful, full-time public-school service in a non-classroom position(s) with assigned responsibilities directly related to pupil attendance services, student counseling, school social work, student discipline, student health and wellness,

or educational options

  • A valid California Administrative Services Credential
  • A valid California Pupil Personnel Services Credential OR a valid California Health Services Credential authorizing service as a psychiatric social worker
  • An earned master’s degree or advanced degree of at least equivalent standard conferred by a regionally-accredited college or university
  • Completion of required Multicultural Education and Master Plan coursework*

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful experience implementing tiered, school-based or District-wide student health and human services programs and services
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in utilizing student information systems (e.g., MyData, MiSiS, FOCUS) and other computer software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Successful experience coordinating attendance improvement or dropout prevention and recovery programs
  • Experience with planning and implementing differentiated professional development
  • Experience with supervising and evaluating staff
  • LCSW or on track for licensure with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences
  • Demonstrated knowledge of District policies and procedures, goals, objectives, organizational structure, and functions
  • Knowledge of public and private resources and child advocacy institutions working in coordination with the educational system and student health and human services staff and understanding the strengths and needs of underserved student populations, such as of English learners, Standard English learners, students with disabilities, students identified as gifted and talented, socioeconomically disadvantaged students, and students of various languages and cultures
  • Effective oral and written communication skills

Ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse populations and socioeconomic groups
