In support of Kennedy Krieger Institute’s mission, vision, and values, the Social Worker II provides clinical social work services to children, adolescents, adults, and families within our outpatient medical clinics.
In this role, you will assess psychosocial needs, develop care plans, provide crisis intervention, connect patients and families with essential resources, and help overcome barriers to health and well-being. The Social Worker II also responds to urgent mental health needs, including positive suicide screenings, and collaborates closely with interdisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated, patient- and family-centered care.

Key Responsibilities
- Accept referrals for care coordination services within outpatient medical clinics.
- Assess patient and family needs, document contacts and case activity, and coordinate appropriate follow-up.
- Provide on-call social work support to outpatient medical clinics, prioritizing requests based on acuity.
- Conduct risk assessments, safety planning, disposition support, and short-term follow-up for patients who screen positive for suicide risk or express suicidal ideation.
- Connect patients and families with resources related to urgent psychosocial needs, including housing instability, food insecurity, intimate partner violence, and caregiver mental health needs.
- Coordinate referrals for mental health services and other community-based supports.
- Provide consultation to outpatient clinicians regarding abuse and neglect reporting.
- Provide billable clinical sessions for select cases and maintain timely, appropriate documentation in accordance with professional, departmental, and Institute guidelines.
- Collaborate with medical clinic staff to maintain current resource and referral information.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, committees, training, and community outreach as assigned.
Qualifications
- Current Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) license issued by the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners is required.
- Clinical social work experience obtained through internships, field placements, or employment is required.
- Experience working with children, adolescents, or young adults with developmental, learning, and/or emotional disabilities is preferred.
Education
- Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited school of social work is required.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Ability to travel between offices, departments, and locations as needed.
- Ability to travel to different sites within Maryland and/or nationally when necessary.
- Ability to use computers, peripheral devices, equipment, and assistive technology required for the position.
- Ability to perform the physical requirements necessary to safely assess and support patients, including moving work-related materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to safely perform CPR when appropriate.
- Ability to safely work with children who may have severe behavioral challenges and to observe and document patient behavior.
- Availability to work outside normally scheduled hours when needed.
- Physical presence at the assigned worksite is required. Hybrid or remote work may be available at the discretion of department leadership.
- The position may involve exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, potentially hazardous materials, and aggressive or combative behavior.
