The Embrace Initiative at the University of Maryland, Baltimore has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Social Worker. The Senior Social worker will work with our Kinship Navigator program. This position works directly with the Department of Social Services (BCDSS), under the auspices of the Maryland Department of Human Services (DHS), manages and provides various social services programs in Baltimore City. These programs provide a safety net to the City's most vulnerable citizens and include the distribution of federal benefits (i.e., Temporary Cash Assistance or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), Child and Adult Protection, Family Preservation, Foster Care and Adult Guardianship. Through these programs and others, BCDSS works with urgency to assist and empower people in economic need, to provide prevention services, and to protect vulnerable children and adults.

This is a full-time, regular position.

Primary Duties

  • Senior Social Worker works under the supervision of a Social Worker (LCSW-C) and apply theories, knowledge, procedures, methods, and/or ethics derived from a formal educational program in social work to restore or enhance social functioning of individuals, couples, families, groups, organizations or communities through assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, and advocacy. With the client as a participant, Senior Social Worker uses individualized plans to provide social services and assistance to improve the individual’s well-being. May have responsibility for program elements.
  • Assess risk by screening and interviewing clients. Identify and construct service plans that best meet the client’s needs and determine best resources available.
  • Develop plans by identifying programs and services available for a variety of client issues dealing with challenges, change, and crisis. May have responsibility for program elements.
  • Maintain case history records and document client(s) progress. May perform chart reviews and generate notes on evaluations, therapy sessions, reports and other accountability measures.
  • Counsel individuals, groups, families, or communities regarding issues including mental health, poverty, unemployment, substance abuse, physical abuse, rehabilitation, social adjustment, childcare, and/or medical care in accordance with licensure.
  • Provide training, guidance, and support to others preparing for use of resources.
  • Supervise other social workers, interns, students, or employees in accordance with licensure.
  • Assist in development of policies, protocols, or procedures as requested.
  • May review and provide submission of authorized documentation for reimbursement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Education: Master's Degree in Social Work.
Experience: One (1) year related social worker experience with licensure as either LMSW, LCSW or LCSW-C in related area of treatment including responsibility for training, work coordination, and monitoring the work of others.
Preferred Supervisory Experience: Supervisory experience is preferred.
Certification/Licensure: State of Maryland licensure as a Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW), or Licensed Certified Social Worker - Clinical (LCSW-C).
Other: No substitution of experience for minimum education requirement.

Hiring Range: $76,000 - $85,000, commensurate with education and experience.
