Position Title: School Counselor, 7-12 Grade

Employment Classification: Full-time, Salary, Exempt, Certificated (12 months)

Reports to: Head of School


  

Position Summary:

Along with support staff and school administrative leadership team, revise and implement equitable school wide guidance and counseling program grades 7-12. The school counselor understands the need to develop and implement a trauma-informed school counseling program and supports the academic, career, and social and emotional development of each student. The school counselor provides leadership for the development and implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program. Leadership responsibilities include working with site management on issues that affect school-wide practices; working collaboratively; fulfilling professional responsibilities; and participating in school leadership teams.
  

Major Areas of Responsibility: 

  • Individual student academic planning and goal setting
  • School counseling class or school wide lessons based on student success standards in short-term counseling to students
  • Referrals for long-term support (tier I/II interventions)
  • Collaboration with parents/caregivers, staff and community partners for student success
  • Advocacy for students at individual education plan meetings and other student-focused meetings
  • Data analysis to identify student issues, needs and challenges
  • Act as a systems change agent to improve equity and access, achievement and opportunities for all students
  • Work with local colleges to provide dual enrollment opportunities
  • Maintain accurate records related to counseling of students
  • Support A-G eligibility for each student
  • Co-design and implement equitable master scheduling
  • Serve as expert in social emotional learning and post-secondary education requirements for all stakeholders
  • Plan and execute school wide events related to counseling and parent/caregiver education

Requirements

Knowledge, Skill, and Experience Requirements: 

  • Master’s degree in school counseling
  • Meet the California certification/licensure standards
  • Uphold counseling ethical and professional standards
  • Bilingual Spanish/English (speaking, reading, writing)
  • Possess a valid California driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance. Position requires DMV clearance.
  • Pre-employment screenings include criminal background check, FBI/DOJ fingerprinting, TB test, drug screen, and previous employment verification.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build rapport with students and colleagues.
  • Takes initiative in student advocacy and support.


Working Environment/Physical Requirements: 

  • Primarily an office environment. Position may require use of personal vehicle. Physical requirements include standing, sitting, typing, bending and lifting up to approximately 50 lbs. (i.e. tables, chairs, food, water, etc.)
  • Modification to work schedule may be made based on needs of the Academy.
