School Counselor – Gifted & Twice-Exceptional (2e) Students
FlexSchoolFlexSchool is seeking a warm, collaborative School Counselor (or professional in a related field) to join our community and support our gifted and twice-exceptional (2e) students.
This is an exciting opportunity to help shape a small elementary program designed for students who learn and experience the world in different ways. Our counselor works closely with students, teachers, families, and school leadership to create a supportive, neurodiversity-affirming environment where students feel understood, connected, and able to learn.
What You'll Do
- Build trusting relationships with students through regular classroom presence and informal connection throughout the school day.
- Provide proactive and responsive support during periods of overwhelm or dysregulation.
- Maintain a welcoming support space students can access for recharging, emotional or sensory regulation, and problem-solving.
- Provide individual counseling and IEP-mandated counseling services as needed.
- Facilitate weekly small-group counseling sessions.
- Teach health and social-emotional learning with a focus on self-understanding, relationships, emotional well-being, and self-advocacy.
- Partner with teachers to understand individual student profiles and develop proactive, neurodiversity-affirming supports that promote engagement, participation, and access.
- Collaborate with the Head of School to develop individualized student support and safety plans when needed.
- Maintain regular, collaborative communication with families and outside service providers.
- Develop and update student learning profiles using evaluations and input from students, families, staff, and outside providers.
- Participate in IEP meetings, student articulation meetings, and professional development; participate in and, as appropriate, lead staff training.
- Collaborate with school leadership and admissions in reviewing and supporting prospective students, including consultation with outside clinicians when appropriate.
- Supervise counseling interns, if applicable.
You May Be a Great Fit If You...
- Genuinely enjoy working with gifted, neurodivergent, and twice-exceptional students.
- Approach behavior with curiosity rather than assuming defiance or lack of motivation.
- Understand the importance of relationships and connection in helping students feel safe and ready to learn.
- Can provide clear structure while preserving student autonomy and choice.
- Are comfortable adapting your plans or counseling approach when something isn't working.
- Stay calm, flexible, and supportive when students are having a hard time.
- Understand that regulation may look different for different students.
- Are creative, enthusiastic, collaborative, and reflective.
- Bring warmth and a sense of humor to your work with students.
- Are open to feedback and ongoing learning about neurodiversity, autism, 2e development, and disability-affirming practice.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in School Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field preferred.
- 2+ years of experience working with children in a school, counseling, or related setting preferred.
- Experience supporting twice-exceptional learners strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with neurodiversity-affirming approaches such as Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) or DIR/Floortime, co-regulation, and strengths-based student support preferred.
- Understanding of sensory needs, executive functioning, emotional regulation, and developmental differences.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills.
