Description

The Jed Foundation (JED) is a nonprofit that protects emotional health and prevents suicide among the nation’s teens and young adults. JED’s School Programs and Consulting (SPC) division partners with high schools, districts, colleges, and community-based organizations to assess student needs, build customized strategic plans, and provide sustained technical assistance that leads to measurable improvements in student mental health. The Regional Director, Intermountain West will serve as JED’s representative and relationship-builder across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming; three frontier states where geographic distance, workforce shortages, and fragmented local systems make coordinated, trusted regional infrastructure essential. This is a hybrid strategic and operational leadership role: the Director will build JED’s brand and network across the region, generate and cultivate new partnership and business opportunities, and help lead and support, in a matrixed capacity, the region’s Consultants delivering JED’s District Mental Health Initiative (DMHI) and other school-based programming, and represent the full breadth of JED’s work — schools and districts first, alongside JED’s programming for community-based organizations (CBOs) to education leaders, state agencies, coalitions, funders, and (as JED’s merger with AFSP progresses) AFSP chapters across the three states. The Director generates leads for new school and community partnerships, opens doors, and builds the relationships that make new opportunities possible, then coordinates closely with JED’s School Partnerships team to convert those opportunities into signed engagements. Success in this role depends on deep relationship-building instincts, comfort operating as a public-facing ambassador, and the management skill to lead a small, geographically dispersed regional consulting team. This is a remote, Intermountain West–based position with regular travel across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming (approximately 40–50%) and periodic travel to JED’s NYC headquarters. Candidates should reside in the Mountain West Region

Key Responsibilities

Regional Brand-Building, Relationship Cultivation & Convening (30%)
  • Serve as JED’s primary face and voice across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, building JED’s name recognition and credibility among education and mental health leaders in a region where JED’s brand is still emerging.
  • Build and steward relationships with key state and regional entities, including state Departments of Education, Departments of Health and Human Services, Tribal education authorities, and regional education associations.
  • Cultivate relationships with community-based organizations (youth-serving, school-adjacent) and local nonprofits, and with philanthropic partners active in the region, including funders such as The Ortus Foundation.
  • Represent JED in influential relationship-building spaces, including community coalitions, advisory boards, task forces, and public forums positioning JED as a convener that brings together local partners, CBOs, and funders around shared youth mental health goals, not only as a service provider.
  • Serve as JED’s regional liaison to AFSP chapters across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming as JED’s merger with AFSP advances, identifying opportunities for AFSP chapters to engage in and support JED’s regional work.
New Business Development & Lead Generation (20%)
  • Identify and cultivate new leads and partnership opportunities with districts, high schools, and CBOs across the region.
  • Coordinate closely and consistently with JED’s School Partnerships team, handing off qualified leads and supporting the relationship context needed to close new district and school engagements.
  • Track and manage the regional pipeline of prospective partners, using Salesforce or other CRM tools to document engagement and coordinate handoffs.
  • Identify opportunities to align JED’s work with existing state initiatives and funding streams to expand reach and long-term sustainability.
Team Leadership & Program Oversight (30%)
  • Matrix-manage JED’s regional Senior Consultants/Consultants delivering the District Mental Health Initiative and other school-based programming across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming in close partnership with the Senior Director, District Programs.
  • Provide mentorship, coaching, and performance management; monitor caseloads and ensure program milestones and quality standards are met across the regional portfolio.
  • Coordinate across the region’s consulting team to ensure consistent, high-quality delivery of JED’s Comprehensive Approach to Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention for Districts.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and future scaling of regional consulting capacity as JED’s presence in the Intermountain West grows.
Ambassador for JED’s Full Program Portfolio (15%)
  • Serve as spokesperson and ambassador for the full range of JED’s programs and relationships including JED High School, JED and AASA’s District Mental Health Initiative, JED Campus, and JED’s CBO-focused trainings and programming with the deepest focus on JED’s work in schools, and specifically districts and high schools.
  • Attend and present at regional conferences and convenings, sharing JED’s model and advocating for comprehensive, systems-based mental health programming.
  • Serve as a thought leader on emotional health promotion and suicide prevention tailored to the frontier and rural context of the Intermountain West.
Division-Wide Support (5%)
  • Work closely with SPC leadership on regional strategy, team culture, and cross-team initiatives.
  • Contribute regional insight to the design and refinement of JED’s programmatic and consulting materials, particularly as they relate to frontier, rural, and tribal communities.
  • Other duties as assigned by JED leadership related to regional programming and partnerships.
Competencies:
  • Scope and Execution: Operates as a subject matter expert who drives regional strategy and independently identifies stakeholders and resources needed to advance JED’s work.
  • People Leadership & Management: Builds and actively supports matrixed management of a high-performing, geographically dispersed team; coaches, sets expectations, and gives timely feedback.
  • Relationship Building & External Representation: Prioritizes relationship-building as a core function of the role; comfortable convening diverse partners (government, nonprofit, philanthropic) around shared goals.
  • Communication: Communicates JED’s mission and program model clearly to varied audiences, from district superintendents to state agency leaders to funders.
  • Collaboration and Cross-Team Impact: Coordinates seamlessly with School Partnerships, SPC program teams, and JED’s broader leadership to convert relationships into results.
  • JED Citizenship: Represents JED’s mission and Comprehensive Approach with credibility and cultural humility, particularly when engaging Tribal nations and frontier communities.

  • Minimum of 2+ years managing teams, including hiring, coaching, and performance management.
