Description

Under the direction of the School Leader, the Parent Coordinator provides professional leadership and coordination for the school’s family engagement and parent involvement initiatives. The Parent Coordinator develops, implements, evaluates, and continuously improves programs and strategies designed to strengthen partnerships among families, students, teachers, school leadership, and community organizations.

The position is responsible for assessing family and community needs, developing engagement strategies, coordinating parent and family programs, and providing recommendations to school leadership regarding initiatives that support student achievement, attendance, retention, and overall student success. The Parent Coordinator exercises independent judgment and discretion in establishing appropriate methods of communication, addressing family concerns, coordinating services and resources, and determining strategies to effectively engage individual families and the broader school community.

The position requires a high degree of professionalism, empathy, tact, diplomacy, confidentiality, integrity, and the ability to establish and maintain trusting relationships with families, staff, students, community partners, and other stakeholders.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Develops, coordinates, implements, and evaluates comprehensive parent and family engagement strategies aligned with the school's goals, objectives, and student achievement initiatives.
  • Collaborates with school leadership, teachers, support staff, parents, families, and community partners to identify opportunities and develop programs that strengthen family engagement and support student academic achievement, attendance, behavior, retention, and overall success.
  • Provides leadership in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the school's parent and family involvement program.
  • Researches and utilizes evidence-based and research-informed strategies to increase meaningful family participation and strengthen partnerships between the school and its families.
  • Serves as a professional resource to school leadership and staff regarding family engagement, parent communication, community resources, and strategies for addressing barriers that may affect student success.
  • Assesses the needs of parents and families through surveys, meetings, individual contacts, and other appropriate methods; analyzes findings and makes recommendations to school leadership regarding programming, services, and engagement strategies.
  • Develops, analyzes, and communicates parent and family survey results and other engagement data to school leadership and appropriate stakeholders.
  • Plans, organizes, coordinates, and leads parent and family engagement activities, workshops, meetings, events, and other initiatives designed to promote meaningful family participation in the school community.
  • Promotes parents and families as active partners in the educational process by facilitating opportunities for their input and participation in school improvement, family engagement planning, and related decision-making processes.
  • Develops and maintains effective communication strategies with parents and families using appropriate communication methods based on individual circumstances, needs, and preferences.
  • Conducts home visits, when appropriate and consistent with school procedures, to establish and strengthen communication with parents and guardians and to identify and address circumstances that may be affecting a student's academic success, attendance, behavior, or access to school and community resources.
  • Works collaboratively with families to identify barriers to student success and develops or coordinates appropriate strategies, referrals, and resources to address identified needs.
  • Maintains knowledge of relevant public and private agencies, community resources, and support services and facilitates appropriate connections between families and available resources.
  • Establishes and maintains professional relationships with community agencies and organizations to expand resources and opportunities available to students and families.
  • Maintains appropriate records and documentation related to family engagement activities, contacts, referrals, programs, and outcomes in accordance with school policies and applicable requirements.
  • Protects the confidentiality of student, family, and school information and exercises appropriate discretion when handling sensitive or confidential matters.
  • Provides school staff and leadership with relevant information obtained through family and community contacts when such information may assist in identifying or resolving issues affecting student success, while maintaining appropriate confidentiality.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the school's parent and family engagement policies, procedures, and initiatives.
  • Attends and promotes participation in Parent Organization Committee meetings and other parent leadership activities.
  • Represents the school at appropriate community meetings, family engagement events, and partner activities.
  • Attends regular school leadership and staff meetings, as appropriate, and provides professional perspective, recommendations, and insight regarding family engagement, community partnerships, and opportunities to improve school programs and services.
  • Independently prioritizes and coordinates multiple family engagement initiatives and responsibilities while meeting established goals, deadlines, and organizational priorities.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement and recommends new or modified approaches to strengthen family engagement and support the school's strategic objectives.
  • Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned by the School Leader.

Requirements

Knowledge & Skills:
Requires thorough knowledge of family engagement principles, parent involvement strategies, community resources, and practices that support student achievement and school-family partnerships. Knowledge of the rules, goals, objectives, policies, and programs of the school is required. Must have the ability to identify and utilize relevant public and private agencies and community resources. Demonstrated knowledge of effective communication, conflict resolution, community outreach, and relationship-building strategies is required.


Abilities:
Must be able to independently perform the essential duties of the position effectively and efficiently. Requires the ability to exercise independent judgment, discretion, initiative, and sound professional judgment in addressing family concerns and developing appropriate strategies and solutions.

Must be able to establish and maintain positive, professional working relationships and gain the confidence of individuals contacted in the course of work. Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to prepare clear, concise reports, presentations, correspondence, and other professional documents.

Requires the ability to assess situations, identify needs, analyze information, develop recommendations, and implement appropriate solutions. Must be able to effectively communicate and relate to individuals and families from diverse backgrounds, including historically underserved, ethnic, and minority communities.

Requires the ability to maintain confidentiality, manage sensitive information appropriately, work independently, organize multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and exercise discretion in matters involving students, families, staff, and community partners.


Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in education, social work, psychology, human services, communications, family studies, community development, or a related field required.

A minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in family engagement, parent/community outreach, education, social services, community relations, student support services, or a related field preferred.

Experience developing, coordinating, and evaluating programs or initiatives involving families, students, schools, or community organizations is preferred.

Experience working with diverse populations and establishing partnerships with community-based organizations is preferred.
