The Prevention Specialist assist in providing classroom education and resources to regional school districts, community agencies, businesses and individuals. The PS should be able to work effectively with others including students, parents, administration and community members.

Position Details:

Full-Time: 40 hours per week
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM

Job Knowledge and Comprehension:


Delivers evidence-based curriculum on the topics of substance misuse and mental health to classrooms in HSA’s six county area.
Provides resource materials to regional school districts, community agencies, organizations, businesses and individuals in northeastern South Dakota.
Organizes conducts and/or attends regional trainings and education to schools and community groups within the region.
Assist in developing prevention resources and preparing materials for training, presentations, and meetings.
Attends appropriate trainings, conferences and workshops, as directed/approved, to keep current on research and programming, thus improving the quality of services provided.
Submits timely monthly and end-of-year reports to the Program Supervisor.
Maintains consistent record of daily contacts/activities to facilitate monitoring and evaluation of prevention services.
Demonstrates proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), and other software necessary to develop educational materials, presentations, reports, and maintain required documentation.
Performs other duties as assigned.


Physical Requirements:
Required to sit for long periods.  Infrequent light physical effort required lifting up to 10 lbs. occasionally and 25 lbs. rarely. The employee frequently is required to sit and reach with hands and arms. Employee may be required to work extended periods at a computer monitor.  Must be able to drive vehicle frequently.
QualificationsBachelor Degree in Public Health Education, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work, Family & Consumer Sciences, Community Development or closely related field.

The Board of Directors of the Human Service Agency shall have the prerogative to hire staff whose qualifications may vary from the above.  This position requires access to Electronic Personal Health Information (EPHI).  Current HSA Policies and Procedures apply. It is the responsibility of the employee to read, understand, and comply with HSA policies and procedures that apply to protected information and security.  Questions about EPHI and HSA Policies should be directed to the HSA Security Officer.  Services provided by HSA will be welcoming, accessible, integrated, and responsive to the complex needs of people with co-occurring disorders/conditions.
