POSITION SUMMARY & PURPOSE


The school MSW Practicum Student is an in-training mental health professional working on a degree in social work who assists in providing services related to a person's social, emotional, and life adjustment to school and/or society.  The MSW Practicum Student assists in providing direct as well as indirect services to students, families, and school personnel to promote and support students' academic and social success.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties and responsibilities described herein are not a comprehensive list, and additional tasks may be assigned to the employee from time to time, as necessitated by business demands.

Services to Students

  • Working with those problems in a child's living situation that affect the child’s adjustment in school (home, school, and community)
  • Mobilizing family, school, and community resources to enable the child to learn as effectively as possible in his or her educational program.
  • Assessing students with mental health concerns.
  • Participating in staff in-service training programs.

Services To Parent/Families

  • Working with parents to facilitate their support in their children's school adjustment.
  • Assisting parents to access programs available to students with special needs.
  • Assisting parents in accessing and utilizing school and community resources.
  • Assisting with Family and Student services as designated by grant and supervisor

Behavioral Intervention Planning

  • Help with monitoring and adjusting intervention strategies as needed to effectively address student behavior and promote positive outcomes.

School-Community Liaison

  • Aid in obtaining and coordinating community resources to meet students' needs.
  • Helping school districts receive adequate support from social and mental health agencies.
  • Advocating for new and improved community/school services to meet the needs of students and families.
  • Helping the system respond effectively to each child's needs.
  • Identifying and reporting child abuse and neglect.

Collaboration and Consultation

  • Collaborate with teachers, counselors, and other school personnel to coordinate support services and ensure a cohesive approach to behavior management.
  • Consult with parents/guardians to gather information, provide updates on student progress, and collaborate on behavior intervention strategies for use at home and school.
  • Participate in meetings to discuss student progress, review intervention plans, and make recommendations for adjustments or additional support.

Data Collection and Analysis

  • Analyze behavior data to identify trends, evaluate the effectiveness of intervention strategies, and make data-driven decisions to inform future interventions.
  • Coordinate with teachers, counselors, and other school personnel to showcase school trends and student growth through service data

Professional Development and Training

  • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities related to behavior intervention, trauma-informed practices, restorative practices and social-emotional learning.
  • Stay informed about best practices and emerging trends in behavior management and intervention strategies, and share knowledge and expertise with colleagues.

  • Proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office and/or equivalent software.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with students, staff, and parents in a professional manner.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position may require sitting, standing, and walking for intermittent periods, as well as moderate dexterity in operating standard office equipment (e.g., computer, printer, copier). 
  • This position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, and speaking.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

In collaboration with SchoolSmartKC and the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s School of Social Work, the Practicum Student receives a monthly stipend as assigned in the agreement with the School.
