General Summary:

The Town of Smithfield is seeking a skilled, compassionate, and experienced Social Worker to join its Human Services Department. This position provides clinical support, crisis intervention, and case management services to residents across the lifespan, including youth, families, adults, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.


Working as part of a collaborative municipal team, the Social Worker assesses individual and family needs, responds to crises, connects residents with essential resources, and promotes stability, independence, and overall well-being within the community. This role is ideal for a public-service-oriented professional who values teamwork and is committed to making a meaningful impact in a municipal setting.


The position operates under the supervision of the Human Services Director. The work schedule is based on the department's day-to-day operational needs.

Weekly Schedule:

  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday: 10:00 am - 3:00 pm (1/2 Lunch)
  • Tuesday and Thursday: 10:00 am  - 7:00 pm (1/2 Lunch)



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct client intakes, assessments, and eligibility screenings
  2. Provide short-term counseling, crisis intervention, and ongoing case management with a focus on but not limited to social-emotional wellbeing.
  3. Develop service plans and coordinate referrals to internal and external resources
  4. Advocate for clients to ensure access to appropriate services and support
  5. Collaborate with Town departments, community agencies, and service providers
  6. Coordinate and administer community programs and events
  7. Develop and deliver educational materials and public presentations as needed
  8. Maintain accurate, confidential client records and required documentation
  9. Provide administrative and programmatic support to the Human Services Director as assigned
  10. Participate in meetings, emergency response efforts, and program coverage as required


  • Job Requirements – Education & Training:
  • Master’s degree in social work with licensure in accordance with the State of Rhode Island statutes
  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional social work experience; public sector experience preferred
  • Maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, community partners, stakeholders, and the public
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to learn and use departmental and municipal software systems
  • Valid driver’s license
