CUNY EDGE is a grant-funded partnership between the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the City University of New York (CUNY), operating across 20 CUNY colleges. The program supports students receiving Cash Assistance in achieving academic success, completing their degrees, and preparing for meaningful careers. 

CUNY EDGE utilizes a holistic model that integrates academic advising, career development, and case management to support students from enrollment through graduation and into the workforce. 
 

Position Summary 

Reporting to the Director, the Advisor plays a critical role in delivering an integrated advising experience that blends academic planning, career development, and personalized individual student support. The Advisor manages a caseload of students and provides proactive, student-centered guidance to promote persistence, completion, and post-graduation success. The Advisor also supports the HRA Fellowship Program - a paid opportunity for CUNY EDGE students. The program promotes a culture of student engagement and skill development via workshops, weekly timesheets, and ongoing participation requirements.  

This role requires a holistic approach that connects students’ academic experiences with career pathways, while also supporting their navigation of institutional and public benefit requirements. The Advisor fosters a supportive and inclusive environment where students feel empowered to achieve their goals.  

This is a grant-funded position with the Research Foundation of CUNY. 
 

Core Responsibilities 

  • Provide holistic one-on-one and group advising that intentionally integrates academic planning, career development, and individualized support to help students persist, graduate, and achieve post-graduation goals 

  • Guide students in selecting majors, planning coursework, the scholarship process, and staying on track for timely graduation  

  • Support students in exploring career interests, understanding workforce expectations, applying for internship/ employment opportunities, and accessing career development resources 

  • Maintain a caseload and deliver consistent, proactive support, including monitoring academic progress and intervening early to address challenges 

  • Assist students in navigating financial aid, scholarships, and public benefit requirements, including documentation processes, such as completing the HRA 154- school letter 

  • Contribute to program communications, materials, and initiatives  

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of advising interactions and student outcomes in the Data Management System (DMS – CUNY EDGE’s custom database) and EAB Navigate  

  • Support with the HRA Fellowship Program, including student onboarding, orientation, workshops, timesheet tracking, case notes, and ongoing student engagement 

  • Contribute to audit readiness and reporting by maintaining thorough records, supporting documentation collection, and ensuring alignment with program and HRA requirements 

  • Participate in program planning, staff meetings, and continuous improvement efforts, including data collection and assessments 

  • Perform other duties as assigned  
     

Notes: 

Until further notice, this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule. 
 

Qualifications 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, social work, public administration, or a related field  

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in advising, case management, or student support services  

  • Demonstrated ability to support diverse student populations, including first-generation and low-income students  

  • Strong communication, organizational, and documentation skills  

  • Ability to build trust and rapport with students using a student-centered and culturally responsive approach  

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and similar tools 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Master’s degree in a related field: Public Administration, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology

  • Experience in higher education advising or workforce development programs  

  • Familiarity with public benefits systems and/or compliance requirements  

  • Experience using student information systems or advising platforms (e.g., Navigate, CRM tools)  

  • Experience supporting internships, job placement, or career programming  

  • Bilingual proficiency (Spanish preferred) 

Pay Range:

$55,000–$60,000
