What You'll Be Doing

Wake County Health and Human Services is looking for a Bilingual HIV/STD Community Testing Counselor to join the HIV/STD Community Health Team! The HIV/STD Community Health Team supports the HIV and Sexually Transmitted Diseases/Hepatitis C (HIV/STD/Hep C) Community Program within Wake County Health and Human Services Department - Preventive Division.


Ways the Community Counselor will serve their clients: 

  • Provides confidential, compassionate, non-judgmental, client-centered HIV/STD/Hep C counseling and testing to individuals seeking services at community/clinic testing sites and events
  • Conducts blood draws/specimen collection, laboratory packaging and transport of biohazard and urine specimens for HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and Hep C, in accordance with testing protocols
  • Applies and provides individual HIV/STD/PrEP education, limited STD Treatment, and linkage to care
  • Documents client registration information in medical record and laboratory websites
  • Records tests and results in client medical records and provides results and additional counseling to clients coming back for results and treatment
  • Participate with teams and community screenings in community outreach
  • Provide data collection and narrative reports as required
  • Participates in staff meetings and staff development
  • Provide culturally competent HIV pre-test counseling and give test results with appropriate post-test counseling

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • Bachelor's degree
  • No specific experience required
  • Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
  • Certified Medical Assistant certification
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted
  • Please include ALL prior work experience on your application and resume.

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • Spanish language skills strongly preferred
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
  • NC Whetstone Training
  • Phlebotomy skills
  • Experience providing health education related to sexuality, HIV, and Sexually Transmitted Diseases
  • Experience working with individuals engaged in high risk behaviors including, including incarcerated individuals, sex workers, men who have sex with men and others

How Will We Know You're 'The One'?

  • Must be highly comfortable and non-judgmental with the ability to have open discussions with anyone, including incarcerated individuals, sex workers, men who have sex with men, others who engage in high risk behaviors
  • Ability to order lab tests through the EMR system, GE Centricity
  • NC Whetstone Training completed or completed within 3 months of hire
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy or willingness to be trained

Employment Type: Regular

Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 8:30am - 5:15pm

Hiring Range: 26.07-29.81

Market Range: 26.07 - 33.55
