Since 1971, the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board has provided the highest quality of behavioral health services to residents of the cities of Hampton and Newport News, Virginia, offering a comprehensive array of programs for both children and adults living with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and/or substance use disorders.

Bright Beginnings is a Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) Day Program that incorporates elements of the clubhouse model. The program promotes a sense of importance, ownership, and empowerment through active participation and contribution. Participants are supported in building self-esteem and self-confidence in a normalized, encouraging environment. Services emphasize individual strengths, independent decision-making, and meaningful involvement in treatment goals, with the ultimate aim of successful community reintegration in the least restrictive setting.

Position Summary

The Community Support Specialist - PRS supports adults served in Bright Beginnings by strengthening skills that promote recovery, independence, and community stability. This role exists to provide structured psychosocial rehabilitation supports while ensuring timely, accurate service delivery.

Key responsibilities include independent living skills instruction and vocational coaching; needs assessments and assigned case management; crisis intervention and client advocacy; planning and facilitating individual and group psychosocial development activities; leading group therapy and recreational groups; tracking progress and completing required documentation.

Required qualifications/skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services field (e.g., Social Work, Psychology, Counseling)
  • Six (6) months of related experience or completion of a behavioral health internship
  • Ability to register with the Virginia Board of Counseling as a QMHP-Trainee within 90 days
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License
  • Preferred: American Sign Language (ASL)

A Typical Workday

Your weekday schedule is Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., in a structured day-program setting. You’ll start by reviewing schedules, notes, and priorities for the clients you support, then move between planned groups, brief check-ins, and coordinated activities designed to keep participants engaged and progressing toward individualized goals. Throughout the day, you’ll collaborate with program teammates and communicate with outside partners as needed, balancing supportive interactions with careful attention to service timelines. You’ll close out the day by organizing updates and ensuring records are complete and ready for the next business day.
