Position Summary
The Albuquerque Housing Authority is seeking motivated, patient, and academically driven UNM students to serve as Community Services Assistants. The primary goal of this position is to provide academic assistance, homework help, mentorship to K-12 students, and hosting service coordination workshops and events for residents and students living in AHA housing developments. By bridging the educational gap, Community Services Assistants play a vital role in the AHA mission to empower families toward self-sufficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Academic Support: Provide one-on-one and small group tutoring to students (grades K-12) in core subjects including Math, English/Language, Science, and Social Studies.
Homework Assistance: Help students organize their assignments, understand instructions, and complete homework with accuracy.
Skill Building: Assist students in developing good study habits, note-taking skills, and test-taking strategies.
Service Coordination: Assist the Service Coordination team in identifying non-academic harriers to leaning (such as food insecurity or lack of supplies) and help coordinate referrals to appropriate supportive services or community partners.
Workshops and Events: Support the Service Coordination team in hosting monthly workshops and events for residents.
Mentorship: Serve as a positive role model for youth residents, encouraging academic persistence and higher education aspirations.
Activity Coordination: Assist AHA staff in organizing educational workshops or reading circles during after-school hours.
Reporting: Maintain simple logs of student attendance and progress to help AHA track the impact of the program.

Supervision

The student will report directly to the Housing Services Director, who will provide orientation, weekly check-ins, and performance evaluations

Minimum Qualifications

Enrolled in a degree seeking program at UNM, Enrolled at least half-time (6 hours) at UNM for fall and spring semesters (Audit hours do not count), and if Work Study, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Preferred Qualifications

Qualifications

Eligibility: Must be a current UNM student with an awarded Work Study allocation.
Academic Standing: Must maintain satisfactory academic progress in alignment with UNM’s requirements.
Skills: Strong proficiency in general K-12 subjects (high proficiency in Math or English is a plus).
Soft Skills: Excellent communication skills, patience, empathy, and the ability to work with families and children from divers cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Reliability: Must be dependable and punctual, as students and residents will rely on their presence.
