Clinical Director

Position Description

The Clinical Director (CD) provides clinical oversight and leadership for four supportive housing programs, staffed by approximately 20 case managers total, with the goal of improving client engagement, motivational interviewing and case management skills.   Client populations include formerly homeless single adults and families with HIV/AIDS, many with co-occurring substance use and mental illness; formerly homeless veterans; and formerly homeless general population. The CD provides individual and group supervision to the case management staff in the area of clinical skills development and support within a client-centered, harm reduction framework. The CD works in close collaboration with the Housing Program Managing Directors, as well as the Vice President of Housing, to assist with programmatic planning, clinical needs assessment in addition to providing ongoing training, support and evaluation to staff in order to ensure the highest level of services to clients. 

The ideal candidate will come with a solid foundation and experience in providing clinical supervision and working with the target populations.  The CD also works in close collaboration with other Clinical Directors to provide on-going training, support, and evaluation to staff to ensure the highest level of services to clients of Harlem United.  

Essential Job Functions

The following duties are mandatory requirements of the job:

1. Conduct individual and group supervision with case management staff on a regular basis. 
2. Conduct regular clinical chart reviews for Housing clients. 
3. Support clinical training and skill building with all staff in the Housing Department. 
4. Provide guidance and leadership with clinical interventions and crisis management.
5. Oversee client case conferences and crisis interventions as needed.
6. Provide feedback to staff and supervisors regarding clinical performance.
7. Work as an integral part of the agency in strengthening the agency’s clinical competencies.
8. Lead or participate on committees tasked with developing and carrying out organizational strategic initiatives. 

Other Responsibilities

The following duties are to be performed as assigned by the supervisor:

1. Promote collaboration between clinical, administrative, and evaluation staff.
2. Provide linkage to medical and other service providers.
3. Ensure quality of program services per program policies and funding requirements.
4. Provide clinical and supervisory coverage to Housing Division programs as needed. 

Education and Certification

The successful candidate will have a master’s degree (LMSW, LCSW, LMHC) and at least five years’ experience working with substance use and chronic medical (particularly HIV/AIDS) formerly homeless populations. At least two years’ experience supervising clinical and/or case management staff. Experience in program management is also a plus. 

Special Skills and Knowledge

In addition to the above-listed job responsibilities and educational requirements, the ideal candidate for this position possesses most or all of the following:

1. Basic computer literacy (MS Word, Outlook/email)
2. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
3. Team-building and leadership skills.
4. Competency in making differential diagnoses using the DSM-5 manual.
5. Experience working with social service systems in New York City, including HRA/HASA and DHS. 
6. Proficiency in individual counseling and group facilitation.
7. Experience with and commitment to a Harm Reduction Model.
8. Experience with Trauma Informed Care, Motivational Interviewing and CBT Models of service provision. 
9. Familiarity and commitment with Housing First approach to housing service delivery.
10. Candidate must have a strong sense of commitment to Harlem United’s mission.
