Career Advisor Job Description

Job Title: Career Advisor
Wage: $48,000-$50,000

Department: Workforce Development / Career Services

Location: Bronx NY
Status: Full-Time

Position Summary

The Career Advisor is responsible for preparing participants for employment, training, and career advancement by delivering career readiness services, case management, and barrier-removal support. This role provides direct participant support through intake, assessment, workshop facilitation, interview preparation, resume development, training grant screening, and supportive service referrals.

The Career Advisor works closely with the Recruitment Team and Community Partner team to ensure participants are appropriately assessed, job-ready, and connected to the services needed to move successfully into employment or training. This role also supports offsite events across the city, proctors site safety exams, and plays a key role in the department’s veterans services model. Veterans are case managed through the Career Advisor function and then referred to recruitment for placement services.

The ideal candidate will have strong case management skills, career readiness knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the ability to support a diverse participant population with professionalism and care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct participant intake, orientation, and ongoing assessments to determine employment, training, and supportive service needs.
  • Provide one-on-one career advisement and case management to support participant progress toward employment and training goals.
  • Facilitate workshops on career readiness topics including resume writing, interview preparation, workplace expectations, and job search strategies.
  • Support participants with resume development, interview coaching, and overall job-readiness preparation.
  • Identify employment and training barriers and connect participants to appropriate resources through the Community Partner program and other internal or external referrals.
  • Assess participants for training grant eligibility and assist with enrollment and related documentation.
  • Maintain regular participant follow-up to monitor progress, encourage engagement, and support retention in services.
  • Manage veteran participants through assessment, service planning, case management, and referral to recruiters for job placement support.
  • Work collaboratively with the Recruitment Team to ensure participants referred for job opportunities are prepared and appropriate for placement activity.
  • Partner with the Community Partner team to coordinate referrals and help address barriers such as childcare, transportation, housing, benefits, and other support needs.
  • Support offsite events, hiring events, orientations, and other citywide activities as needed.
  • Proctor site safety exams and ensure all testing procedures are followed accurately and professionally.
  • Maintain timely and accurate case notes, service records, and data entry in required systems.
  • Track participant engagement, referrals, and outcomes in alignment with departmental goals and reporting requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with participants, employers, partners, and internal staff.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, education, workforce development, counseling, or a related field; or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Experience in workforce development, case management, career counseling, or related direct service work.
  • Experience supporting individuals with employment barriers and connecting them to services and resources.
  • Experience facilitating workshops, orientations, or group sessions.
  • Strong knowledge of career readiness practices including resume development, interview preparation, and job search support.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple participants and priorities.
  • Ability to build rapport with diverse populations and provide participant-centered support.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams and departments.
  • Proficiency with data entry, participant tracking, and case documentation systems.
  • Ability to travel within the city for offsite events and service delivery.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with veterans or other priority populations.
  • Experience with training grant screening, enrollment, or workforce-funded training opportunities.
  • Familiarity with supportive service networks and community-based referrals.
  • Experience in a workforce development, nonprofit, or public service setting.
  • Experience proctoring exams or managing structured participant processes.
