Summary

The Camp Common Home Peer Counselor is a Barry University undergraduate student who serves as a frontline community-builder and program support leader during the 5-day Camp Common Home Summer Camp (July 13–17, 2026). Peer Counselors assist Camp Advisors in facilitating small-group activities, fostering camp spirit, and ensuring participant well-being throughout a rigorous schedule of environmental science, social justice, spiritual formation, and leadership development experiences. The role requires full in-person presence, active modeling of Laudato Si’ values, and enthusiastic engagement with high school campers from across South Florida. Peer Counselors serve as visible and positive role models for high school participants, demonstrating values of respect, inclusion, ecological responsibility, and servant leadership in all interactions, both during formal programming and informal time. Peer Counselors complete a required training day prior to camp and support set-up and closing logistics in addition to all programmatic activities in the week leading up to camp and the week after camp.

This is a short-term, role tied to a single 5-day residential camp event (July 13–17, 2026) plus one required training day (July 9, 2026) and camp preparation and clean-up responsibilities on the days leading to and following camp. Peer Counselors must be enrolled Barry University students. A completed onboarding process, background check, and Virtus training are required prior to participation. Given the outdoor and field-based nature of camp activities, candidates should be comfortable in South Florida outdoor environments, including coastal and wetland settings.

  • Build and sustain community among campers by leading ice-breakers, team challenges, evening activities, and informal relationship-building throughout the program day. Model positive engagement and help cultivate a joyful, inclusive camp culture.

  • Participate fully in all spiritual reflection, prayer, and formation experiences integrated throughout the program, helping to create space for campers to engage with eco-spirituality and connect personal experience to ecological vocation.

  • Support hands-on field learning experiences, including water quality testing, Everglades site visits, shark tagging expeditions, and community partner visits by assisting with logistics, participant supervision, and engagement during activities.

  • Assist with daily camp logistics, as well as set-up leading up to camp and breakdown of program spaces after camp concludes, distribution of materials, meal supervision, transitions between activities, and evening routine oversight to ensure smooth and safe camp operations.
