Job Summary:

The behavioral health liaison (BHL) extern, working under the supervision of a licensed mental health professional, provides psychiatric assessment/evaluation and recommendations for the plan of care when patients in the medical setting present with behavioral health concerns. In collaboration with a licensed mental health professional, the BHL extern develops and supports the treatment plan using psychosocial and therapeutic interventions, care coordination and other services as dictated by the plan of care to address patients presenting psychiatric disorder and/or psychosocial issues. Completes all written and electronic documentation following clinic protocol and state certification requirements with clinical documentation co-signed by a licensed team member. Participates in regularly scheduled collaboration and consults with psychiatrists and clinic supervisors. Supports other behavioral health program needs and duties as assigned. An applicant is qualified for the BHL extern role when they have completed a clinical graduate field placement and are within 6 months of graduating with a master’s degree in a mental health related field or they have graduated and will obtain their training license as a mental health provide within 6 months. A BHL extern may remain in this role for no more than 12 months total.

EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION:

Completion of a graduate level clinical field placement in the area of mental health and/or substance use.

In progress of earning or a recent graduate with a master’s degree in social work, counseling, educational psychology, or allied health profession from an accredited college or university is required. Training license is required within 6 months of graduation.

ASAM level of care training.

DSM 5 diagnostic evaluations, suicide risk assessments and safety planning, behavioral health discharge planning.

Licensed Professional Counselor Training license or equivalent is required within 6 months of graduation.
