The Girard School is seeking an outstanding educator to play a central role in the continued development of Merrimack College's new B.S. in Economics. This is a teaching-focused position for a faculty member who is passionate about making economics rigorous, relevant, and accessible to undergraduate students and who is excited by the opportunity to help build a new academic program.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate Economics courses across the curriculum consistent with program needs and the candidate's expertise;

  • Deliver engaging, rigorous, and student-centered instruction to students with varied levels of prior exposure to economics and quantitative methods;

  • Contribute to the continued development and refinement of the B.S. in Economics curriculum.

  • Advise and mentor Economics students and support their academic and professional development;

  • Contribute to the service and intellectual life of the Girard School and Merrimack College.

Qualifications

We seek an economist who is first and foremost an excellent teacher—someone capable of introducing students to economic thinking while also challenging more advanced students to apply economic theory and empirical methods to consequential real-world questions.

The successful candidate should be comfortable teaching across multiple areas of the undergraduate Economics curriculum. Areas of teaching expertise may include:

  • principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics;

  • intermediate microeconomic and macroeconomic theory;

  • econometrics and applied economic analysis;

  • money, banking, and financial markets;

  • labor economics;

  • public economics and public policy;

  • international economics;

  • economics of technology and innovation; and

  • other applied fields consistent with the needs of the program.

We particularly value faculty who can connect economic concepts to questions students encounter in the world around them and help students develop the analytical, quantitative, and critical-thinking skills associated with the discipline.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Economics or a closely related field.

  • Demonstrated ability or strong potential to teach Economics effectively at the undergraduate level, particularly through familiarity with the use and application of AI in the field of Economics and the ability to assess student learning outcomes in an AI-enabled environment.

  • Ability to teach across multiple areas of the undergraduate Economics curriculum.

  • Commitment to student learning, mentorship, and inclusive teaching practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A record of excellence in undergraduate teaching.

  • Experience teaching introductory and intermediate Economics courses.

  • Ability to teach econometrics, applied economics, or other quantitatively oriented courses.

  • Experience contributing to curriculum or program development.

  • Evidence of success mentoring and advising undergraduate students.

Application Materials Should Include:

  • Curriculum vitae

  • Cover letter stating motivation and interest in the position, citing experience relevant to the qualifications and experience associated with key responsibilities for the position including teaching philosophy and evaluations.

  • Contact information for three professional references (name, title, address, phone number, email address). References will be contacted only at a later stage of the search process.

Compensation

The expected 9-month base salary range (paid over 12 months) for the Assistant Professor of Practice rank is $80,000-$105,000. The actual pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as, but not limited to, candidate qualifications and prior experience, scope of responsibilities, internal equity, and market considerations.
