Summary: Advocate Counselors provide effective college and career advising and awareness to students assigned to their caseload to support a strong postsecondary plan and ensure that students graduate feeling comfortable with their postsecondary choices. To do this effectively, Advocate Counselors earn rapport and establish a supportive relationship with each student on their caseload.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Developmental, Social Services
Responsible for overseeing student caseload and collaborating with school personnel for best outcomes Foster student social intelligence through advisory workshops and community eventsCreate and adapt the existing advisory curriculum for engaging lesson planning to meet students' developmental needs and/or employability skillsAssist families with referrals to outside organizations that provide health services, day care, emergency shelter and additional social services as needed Provide intervention and make necessary referrals for students to initiate referral as neededConduct attendance outreach through phone calls, letters, case conferencing and/or home visit - College Access and Post-Graduation Planning
Provide 1:1 college and career advising to caseload, that leads with a focus on students’ future carers with intentional referrals to college and career exploration activities and work-based learning experiences aligned to the Career Navigation Roadmap. Tailor the college and career advising trajectory for each student based on the students’ age and number of credits earned upon enrollment in the school, which determines a transfer school student’s proximity to graduationOffer students guidance and referrals for college and career exploration activities, work-based learning experiences, and career-connected learning opportunitiesTrack all student interactions/outcomes by complying with all agency and LTW data management and collection protocolsWork closely with the guidance counselor/s and other school staff responsible for college and career advising; participate as member in school’s postsecondary team that includes CBO and NYC public school staff to ensure alignment as outlined in the Career Navigation Roadmap Attend all of Office of Student Pathways’ training opportunities Support the Program Director and Work-based Learning Coordinator in identifying advanced coursework that matches a student’s interests and skills Provide families a menu of resources tha specialize in supporting positive post-secondary outcomes for students Counsel students to support post-secondary options: college, vocational, certificate, apprenticeship, military, entrepreneurship - Office administrative duties
Support student admission process (outreach, open houses/intake interviews, new students' orientation, parent orientations among others)Responsible for data entry of all services: attendance outreach, individual counseling, career and college advisement, tutoring, and other interventions and services for caseload assigned Assist students not participating in subsidized internships to provide with paid/unpaid work-based learning experiences during the academic yearAttend partnership meetings with school staff and other stakeholders
Qualifications required:
Bachelor's degree in related fieldDemonstrated commitment to equity, access, and supporting the unique needs of over age, under-credited, and transfer school student populationsExpertise in strengths-based, youth development practices Extensive experience working with urban adolescents individually and in groups Knowledgeable in Microsoft and Excel Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to conduct outreach, monitor student progress, and provide consistent follow-up Strong collaboration skills to work closely with NYC Public Schools guidance counselors, school staff, and CBO teams to ensure a unified and student-centered approach to postsecondary advisingCapacity to simultaneously work on multiple projects and tasks, transitioning easily between working independently and contributing as a member of a team Commitment to the mission of Catholic Charities Community Services
Preferred:
