Overview

The Office of Central Advising is accepting applications for two Academic Advisors. This position will report to the Director of Central Advising and will be responsible for providing personalized and comprehensive academic advising and student success support to assigned student populations under minimal supervision. An active participant in campus-wide advising and retention initiatives, the Academic Advisor utilizes in-depth institutional knowledge and appropriate student development theories to resolve complex situations, facilitate student learning, and ensure University policies and procedures are applied consistently. The Academic Advisor may serve as a team leader, mentor, trainer, and/or supervisor to other Academic Advisors in the absence or at the request of the direct supervisor, but primarily focuses on direct student advising.

Responsibilities

Academic Advising (80%)
  • Provide personalized academic advising to students, assisting with course selection, degree requirements, academic planning, registration, and schedule adjustments.
  • Offer guidance on academic policies, procedures, and resources to support student success, and interpret University policies and curriculum to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Coach students on academic challenges in individual and group formats, providing strategies for improvement and success and making appropriate referrals to support services when necessary.
  • Monitor and track student academic progress, offering proactive support and interventions as needed, especially for at-risk students.
  • Advise students on major selection, career goals, and co-curricular activities to enhance their educational experience.
  • Develop and provide academic resources and materials to students, including a term-by-term academic schedule, study guides, planning tools, and informational brochures.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations and workshops related to academic advising, study skills, and career planning.
  • Demonstrate cultural competency and inclusivity in all interactions with students, colleagues, and stakeholders, engaging in self-reflection and training to challenge personal biases and promote belonging.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of advising policies, procedures, and best practices, developing goals and objectives for improvement of the advising unit in conjunction with the direct supervisor.
  • Utilize advising technologies and tools effectively to support student advising and academic planning, and teach students how to use advising-related software and tools.
  • Solicit and incorporate feedback from students, colleagues, and supervisors to continuously improve advising practices and services.
  • Represent the academic unit or advising department through participation on University committees, caucus leadership, and/or teaching courses.
  • Provide mentorship and training to new advising staff, fostering a collaborative and supportive team environment.
 
Enrollment and Retention Support (20%)
  • Verify, certify, process, and/or complete appropriate student-related forms and procedures, such as degree audits, transcripts, graduation memorandums, registration adjustment request forms, satisfactory academic progress plans, and progress-toward-degree certifications.
  • Review academic records, placement tests, and other standardized test results with students to ensure placement in appropriate courses, and administer overrides when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records in accordance with State/Federal law and University regulations, and ensure data security.
  • Participate in orientation programs, advising events, and recruitment activities to support incoming and prospective students.
  • Establish effective communication channels with students, faculty, and staff to facilitate information sharing and support, ensuring students receive timely information on educational options and University policies.
  • Collaborate with academic departments, career services, counseling centers, and other campus partners to provide comprehensive support to students and develop contacts with departments and faculty.
  • Stay informed about trends, best practices, and developments in academic advising and higher education, and participate in professional development opportunities, training sessions, and conferences.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments and/or colleges and the Director of Central Advising to ensure a coordinated approach to advising and retention.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications 

Bachelor's degree and  at least one year of college student engagement, development, advising, or coaching experience. 

 

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor or Master's degree in psychology, social work, or counseling.
